{"id":3870,"date":"2015-01-20T21:17:56","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T19:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldbrainthefilm.com\/_POLARSTARFILMS2020\/?p=3870"},"modified":"2021-02-22T21:19:12","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T19:19:12","slug":"the-legacy-of-ciutat-morta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.polarstarfilms.com\/en\/the-legacy-of-ciutat-morta\/","title":{"rendered":"The legacy of Ciutat Morta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s just over 4 days since\u00a0<strong>documentary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71703409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ciutat Morta<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was screened on Televisi\u00f3 de Catalunya and the media fallout is still ringing in our ears, confirming without doubt the impact it has had not only on the audience but in all media and political spheres of the country. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.polarstarfilms.com\/img\/4news\/ciutat_morta_documental.jpg\" \/>The censoring of five minutes of the\u00a0<strong>documentary<\/strong>\u00a0by court order and the anger that this caused across social networks generated a so-called\u00a0<strong>Streisand effect<\/strong>: those five minutes viraled through the networks like wildfire and the film got a 20% audience share, a record figure, making it the top-rater for the channel.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71703409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The documentary<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(directed by Xavier Artigas & Xapo Ortega and produced by Metromuster), reveals the torture, bad practices and irregularities surrounding the arrests and convictions in the\u00a0<strong>4-F case<\/strong>\u00a0(4th February 2006), and has opened several fronts of criticism, of which two really stand out for us media-dudes. First, the lack of media exposure of the event and case. The surprise for the audience at the events described in the\u00a0<strong>documentary<\/strong>\u00a0demonstrate the ignorance and lack of informed reporting and make us question how far the long arm of law and institutional forces behind it is able to go in terms of silencing human rights stories and our freedom of expression. It is notable that the film had wait until won awards at the\u00a0<strong>San Sebastian<\/strong>\u00a0(2014) and the\u00a0<strong>M\u00e1laga<\/strong>\u00a0(2014) before being transmitted by TV3, a public television paid for by the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>And secondly, it proves undoubtedly the importance of\u00a0<strong>documentary<\/strong>\u00a0as an informative and journalistic genre. Although developing a\u00a0<strong>documentary project<\/strong>\u00a0can be increasingly challenging (take note that\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71703409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ciutat Morta<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was crowdfunded), documentaries like\u00a0<em>Bowling for Columbine<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Super Size<\/em>\u00a0have led the way for more directors and producers deciding to opt for the investigation and reporting of cases which, otherwise, would become part of a collective amnesia.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a massive media reaction to the TV transmission of the\u00a0<strong>documentary<\/strong>, and I wish this could always be the case. Perhaps the most transcendent reaction has been the requests made by some political parties to reopen the case and do something about the serious cases of corruption that\u00a0<strong>documentary<\/strong>\u00a0exposes.
