UNICORN: Breaking the Law Is Our Business entered production this June with filming taking place in Paris, Barcelona, and Berlin, marking a new stage for this investigative documentary about the power of major technology platforms and their impact on our cities.
Directed by Kelly Nyks, the documentary reveals how some of the world’s most influential technology companies have challenged regulations and legal frameworks to establish monopolistic positions. Through the testimonies of whistleblowers, experts, and people directly affected, UNICORN examines the social and economic consequences of these practices, while highlighting the resistance of cities such as Barcelona, which has become a European benchmark in defending the public interest against the power of global digital corporations.
Beyond its subject matter, UNICORN also reflects Polar Star Films’ ongoing commitment to more sustainable filmmaking. For years, we have integrated environmental practices into both our production methods and the stories we tell, with documentaries such as Freightened (2016), exploring the environmental impact of global shipping, and Only on Earth (2025), focusing on the climate crisis.
For UNICORN, we are once again collaborating with K is for Knowledge, a Barcelona-based sustainability consultancy specializing in the audiovisual sector. Whenever possible, the production team has travelled by train instead of flying, significantly reducing the carbon emissions associated with transportation. We have also prioritized working with local crews in each filming location—including, in Barcelona, production manager Celia Novis, camera operator Oriol Roig, and production assistant Paula Carreras—and staying in environmentally certified accommodation or hotels with proven sustainability practices.
A co-production between Spain, Germany (Eikon) and the Netherlands (Doxy), UNICORN continues Polar Star Films’ commitment to documentary filmmaking that not only addresses the defining issues of our time but is also produced in a more responsible and sustainable way.
We look forward to sharing more updates as the project progresses.
