The documentary Understory (formerly known as Seeing Green) continues to move forward in production and is preparing to enter a key new phase: post-production.

Directed by Canadian filmmaker Su Rynard, the film invites audiences to explore the complex relationships that connect plants, trees, and human beings, drawing on some of the most innovative research in plant intelligence, interspecies communication, and forest ecology.

The documentary features three leading voices in the field: writer and biologist Robin Wall Kimmerer, an internationally recognized authority on the intersection of Indigenous knowledge and science; Spanish researcher Paco Calvo, a pioneer in the study of plant cognition; and forest ecologist Suzanne Simard, whose groundbreaking research has revealed the underground communication networks that connect trees.

The production is led by executive producer Nadine Pequeneza, with Carles Brugueras and Marieke van den Bersselaar serving as producers. Cinematography is by Sean Stiller, while editing is being handled by Caroline Christie. The original score is composed by Claudia Baulies, with sound design by Cora Delgado and location sound recording by Jason Milligan.

The film also features remarkable visual work, including nature time-lapse sequences by Garath Whyte, macro and ultraviolet cinematography by Don Komarechka, and animations by Noah Conti, helping to reveal processes invisible to the human eye.

The post-production phase is being developed in collaboration with Antaviana Films & VFX, with color grading by Lara Vilanova, strengthening an international partnership that brings together creative and technical talent from Canada, Spain, and beyond.

Blending science, nature, and philosophical reflection, The Green Connection offers a new way of understanding our place on the planet and the complex networks of life that sustain ecosystems.
